J+P Role of Honour: Archbishop Oscar Romero
In 1977 Oscar Romero was appointed Archbishop of San Salvador at a time of violent civil unrest. He was quiet, scholarly, a friend of the establishment. But when one of his priests was assassinated by government death squads “his eyes were opened”. He preached passionately against poverty and corruption and published lists of the “disappeared”. He knew the risks - he died a martyr’s death.
